Virtual reality project: 360 degree interactive video of the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. Click to view the video hosted on Facebook using their recent 360 video capability. Photography and media production: Jean-Pierre Lavoie.

An artist draws and transforms his charcoal and pastel drawings into photographs at the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar. This is the main concept behind this virtual reality (VR) project. The final result is a 360 degrees interactive video to immerse yourself in this amazing location through the vision of the real and fictitious artist.

The starting points in this project are the 360 degree panoramas shot at the location. This pagoda is rather large and contains many small fascinating temples so it was not difficult to find various vantage points to capture the panoramas. Then I created an artistic interpretation for each panorama as if it was a charcoal drawing made by an artist. The third part of the cycle is a pastel drawing interpretation for each panorama. When working with 360 degree panoramas one needs to be cautious about not creating artifacts at the seams or wrap around point of the panoramas. This is more so true when post-processing heavily panoramas with editing software. So I created intermediary images to avoid these discrepancies at the seams of the panoramas in order the blend the final charcoal and pastel versions.

After all the different versions of the images were completed the next step was to edit them into a full spherical video adding and mixing sound previously recorded on location along the way. Here are a few images from the project.
